As a runner, one of the best things about the new year is planning for a shiny, new race season. Goals are set and training schedules are made as you push yourself to new running heights, whether in distance, speed, or consistency.
Living in Canada’s largest city, there is no shortage of great races in Toronto and the GTA. From the fast, downhill Yonge Street 10K, obstacle races like the Warrior Dash, and the Niagara Women’s Half-Marathon, there is something for everyone who loves to lace-up and run. Here is a short list of 5 races in the first half of 2013 that you don’t want to miss!
5 Races to Kick Off Your 2013 Running Reason
- Re-Fridgee-Eighter 8K or 8 Mile
Waterloo – Sunday February 17th - This race in Waterloo occurs in the middle of one of the coldest months of the year! If you want to see all your winter running pay off, this may be the race of you. Be sure to dress in layers and don’t forget a toque or headband to keep your ears from freezing.
- Around the Bay 30K
Hamilton – Sunday March 24 - Not only is this Canada’s oldest race, but it started 3 years before the Boston Marathon, making it the oldest race in North America! If you’ve mastered the half-marathon and are looking for a challenge before you take on the full marathon, Around the Bay is the perfect distance. Not sure you want to take on 30K alone? Sign up for the 2 or 3-person relay and run as a team.
- Yonge Street 10K
Toronto – Sunday April 21
Hailed as “Canada’s easiest and fastest downhill 10k”, this race takes you from Eglinton to Front, all the way down Yonge Street! If running among Canada’s elites is a draw for you, last year’s runners included Olympians Eric Gillis and race winner Reid Coolsaet. If you’re planning to run in more than one Canada Running Series event, consider a Combo-Pack to save some cash! - Niagara Falls Women’s Half- Marathon
Niagara Falls – Sunday June 2
In its second year, this women’s only half-marathon features a beautiful and well-organized course, gorgeous scenery, and a pretty sweet swag bag! If you’re looking for your first half-marathon, I would definitely recommend this race as a non-intimidating, yet challenging course. Bonus: this year Katherine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, will be appearing at the race! - Warrior Dash
Barrie – July 20
There is no doubt obstacle races have been gaining in popularity over the past few years. The Warrior Dash is just one of many that take place in and around the GTA. With 17 obstacles such as the Deadweight Drifter and Vicious Valley, this race is sure to challenge your mind and body over the 5.6km course.
