Always the Right Time to Kick-Off Your Healthier Lifestyle

It’s always been time to get healthier. For everyone. Since I created Lifestyle Kick though, it would only make sense for me to be kicking my lifestyle into shape along the way!

Although I’ve been going to the gym and working out with a personal training pretty consistently since the fall, a huge amount of stress, heavy scheduling and deadlines, not enough sleep and inconsistent eating habits have made it very difficult to lose weight or really feel the effects.

This spring, health has become a huge priority overall for me — everything from a consistent workout routine to enough sleep to a more reasonable work schedule.

Make it happen by making a plan

This month, a strict plan of gym, supplements and diet are in place.

Even though 4 intense workouts per week are exhausting, the 3 most challenging parts for me personally are:

  • Not drinking any juice or iced tea (or any drinks with sugar — leaving only water).
  • Getting to bed before midnight (and fitting in 7+ hours of sleep).
  • Eating specific foods every 3 hours (while being all over the GTA for meetings, doing work).

Those will probably continue to be the hardest commitments. Even though I think it’s crazy to cut out pasta (favorite food) and sugary drinks (which I’ve relied on), these are only 2 of the changes that go along with kick-starting my healthier lifestyle.

Keeping crazy busy in all areas of my life, there’s not much time to complain and I’m looking forward to the results — which will hopefully include more energy to get everything done.

For me, I knew it wouldn’t happen without a real meal plan written out where I can see it, and personal training and gym sessions booked into my iCal far in advance. So my advice — get someone else involved, and get scheduling!

As challenging as it may seem, here are a few suggestions I have for you in terms of eating while on-the-go.

Have small sugar free snacks with you. Cut up an apple/orange or other fruit as well as a bag of almonds. Almonds do wonders. If you don’t like having them plain, add some dried fruits to the mix. Granola bars are also a great way to get something in you to keep your metabolism turning without adding to the waste line. I don’t have any specific examples as per what kinds are good for you, I’m in the process myself of learning to make my own.

Instead of just having water, invest or buy some fruit flavoured tea’s. Yes it might sound girly but it satisfies the sugary desire. Green tea with a bit of honey does wonders to your taste buds as well as your body.

In terms of sleep, I can’t make any suggestions there. I’ve personally struggled with that as well. With deadlines and everything else going on, its hard not to work late into the night. If possible, start with dedicating 6.5 or 7 full hours of sleep. Turn everything off an hour earlier (Twitter/Facebook/phone/laptop/TV) and get yourself ready for bed. Read a book (non-work related) and prepare yourself. I found that even with only 6.5 hours of sleep, if I disconnect an hour or so before I get a good nights rest and I’m ready to go the next day.

    Good luck on your journey!
