Welcoming in a New Year, ah yes… fresh starts, new beginnings… closing old chapters and opening new ones. Every year just before January arrives, I take some time to reflect on the past 12 months to see if I accomplished what I had set out to.
For me, self-success has a lot to do with goal setting and fulfilling the needs most important to you, and only you.
“…to remind us before we pop the champagne and celebrate the New Year, to stop and reflect on the year that has gone by. To remember both our triumphs and our missteps – our promises made, and broken. The times we opened ourselves up to great adventures – or closed ourselves down, for fear of getting hurt. Because that’s what New Year’s is all about: getting another chance. A chance to forgive, to do better, to do more, to give more, to love more. And stop worrying about ‘what if’ and start embracing what would be. So when that ball drops at midnight – and it will drop – let’s remember to be nice to each other, kind to each other. And not just tonight but all year long.” – New Years Eve
In 2012, my Word of the Year was Persist – to continue steadfastly or obstinately despite opposition or difficulty. I got through some medical hurdles, some mental challenges, finished my formal schooling, and have recently landed my first full-time, permanent job. It is crazy how far you can come with a little persistence; my parents always taught me when I was younger that good things don’t come to those who wait but to those who work hard, apply themselves and persist!
As the New Year quickly approaches, I am embracing my Word of the Year for 2013: Mindset – a fixed mental attitude of disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretations of situations; an inclination or habit.

Until then, my Challenge for you is this: Choose a word that inspires you and try to follow that word for 12 months as your inspiration for your goals and challenges – you will be surprised at how motivating it becomes!
