What if I told you that you had everything you need to get what you want? What if I took it one step further to say you actually always have everything you need to get what you want? Would you believe me or criticize me? Would it make sense or sound like a bunch of ’new age BS’?
Funny thing is, if you asked me this question last year, I probably would of laughed at you (in front of your face or behind your back) and criticized you for stupid-ical thinking. Funnier thing is the person who prob. told me that is a heck of a lot closer to what they want than what I do as I sit here today.
You see, right or wrong, when you take a step back and look at what you have, you realize it’s all you have. By saying youneed something else is just a block between where you are and what you want. It adds unnecessary headaches and heartaches to our lives. As a leader if you don’t shift this mindframe, you’ll never perform at the capacity you’re capable of.
Here’s a ‘recipe’ that’s worked for me so far in making this mindshift and I hope it works for you.
1. Realize just how much you have
Look around and start writing down everything you have. Everything you can touch, feel, embrace, that’s what you have as well as things that are intangible like skills, talents, and ideas. Make a list. As they say, “count your blessings.” You’ll be amazed at how much you actually have for yourself.
2. Make a very rough and simple plan of how you can use what you have to get what you want
If you don’t have it, you can’t use it. If you think you need a laptop but don’t have it, either add buying a computer to your plan or find an alternative way to use what you have already to help you in place of your own computer. If you think you need it, add it to the plan. Start creating a baby-step path towards what it is you want. It can be in any area in life like career, relationship, or personal growth. I want to emphasize to make it as rough as possible because as you’re about to see plans rarely work out as planned.
3. Take an action on your plan
Now go out and take an action on that plan. See what happens!
4. The result becomes something you have – use it!
If you go out and buy a computer as your action, you then have a computer to add to your list of have’s. You now have the opportunity to use the computer to get closer to what you want.
What if you don’t get the computer, or in other words the result you wanted from the action? Learn from it! There’s a lesson hidden in every result, and in order to handle what you want you first need to have the learned the lessons along the way to getting it. If you don’t learn the lessons, you won’t know how to guide your next move, and if you don’t know how to guide yourself in your next move, how will you ever LEARN to move forward? Now do you see why they say everything happens for a reason .
5. Keep playing until you get what you want
Getting what you want it never a sprint. We’re deceived to thinking it is sometimes (i.e. if you win the lottery), but then again there’s no shortcut to success. It’s something that can’t be robbed. Keep playing and keep tabs of your results. Persistence will get you to where you want to go, just know where that is and listen to what life’s got to offer to help you get there.
6. Realize that if you had it all what would be the point in wanting anything? There would be no game to play, and with no game life is boring
I’ll always say it, life and leadership are games. Those who win are those who play. Either play the game, or sit on the side-lines, just don’t complain you never get what you want. Since when did a fan get to raise the Stanley Cup after winning it!? Not trying to sound arrogant here, because you gotta remember I used to be a superfan myself, and these are things I wish someone told me when I was.
I truly hope this helps anyone who’s looking for it. If it works, please don’t thank me. Thank yourself, because you’ll be one of the few who actually start playing.
